Mirror Lake State Park received its name from Lake Delton, an unusually calm body of water whose surface is glass-like and without a ripple. The still surface reflects the lake's wooded shoreline and 50 foot high cliffs. The lake is surrounded by a swimming beach, wetlands and a variety of native wildlife. To maintain the pristine stillness, park ordinances prohibit all but slow, no-wake boating. Located three miles from Wisconsin Dells, Mirror Lake State Park offers boat, canoe, kayak and bike rentals. With two shallow, weedy bays and 137-acres of waters 10 to 14 feet deep, the lake is a fisherman's paradise filled with largemouth bass, bluegill, northern pike and walleyes. There are 28 miles of year-round hiking trails, off-road bike trails, cross-country ski trails, a snowshoe trail and an interpretive nature trail. There are three picnic areas with grills, including one that is sheltered. The park is the site of the Seth Peterson Cottage, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1958. The structure, a cliff dwelling typical of Wright's later work, was in disrepair when it was discovered in 1980 by a boater gazing up at the tree-lined bluff. The wood, stone and glass cottage has been restored and is available for rental year-round. It's the only Wright house available for rent by the public. A massive central fireplace is the heart of the living area which includes kitchen, living/dining area and bedroom. The interior design includes authentic Wright furnishings and built-in seating and bedding that accommodates four comfortably. Tours of the cottage are available the second Sunday of the month in the afternoon. Every October, there is a Fall Color Boat Tour and Reception. Guests explore Mirror Lake on a pontoon boat and enjoy hors d'oeuvres relaxing around the fireplace. Space is limited and the event sells out early in the year.
