Wollersheim Winery in Prairie du Sac, WI

It may seem unusual to visit a winery in the Midwestern United States, but it is not. You can find several good wineries in the Lake Wisconsin Viticultural Area (LWVA). This includes the well-known Wollersheim Winery in Prairie du Sac. The winery is not only a National Historic Site, it is the home of many popular and excellent regional wines. These include the famed Prairie Fumé. The winery introduced this wine in 1989. It is one of their more popular brands. In June, the winery hosts an event named after it. This is the Prairie Fumé Picnic Days. The Wollersheim Winery also holds an Open House and a Port Release Celebration. They produce a Tawny Port as well as a White Riesling, Domaine Reserve, Pinot Noir and several Prairie line wines including Prairie Blush and Prairie Red.
The Winery has a history extending back to the early 19th century. In the 1840s, Count Agoston Haraszthy, of California wine fame, established a vinery in this spot. His first few years were miserable failures. He sold the place to Peter Kehl. Kehl met with greater success. He and his family continued to produce grapes and wine until 1899. They then converted the winery into a traditional farm. In 1972, Robert and JoAnn Wollersheim purchased the farm and reconverted it. Their daughter Julie married a young winemaker, Philppe Coquard. Since then, the couple has increased the production and reputation of the winery. In 1990, they bought out another local winery, Cedar Creek Winery. In 2008, they converted the old winery into a tasting are and display area. They have a new store where you can purchase their wines, wine-related gifts and Wisconsin cheese. There is an events room, a balcony and an outdoor winter garden. It is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon or evening.
