Deep in the hills and woods of Wisconsin's Rocky Arbor State Park, not far off of highway 12, is a scientific anomaly that defies physics: the so-called Wonder Spot of Wisconsin Dells.
This place was found by accident during the late 1940's. A local resident built a small summer cabin here, and right away noticed certain unusual phenomena. Water draining in the gutters the man and his family installed on the roof seemed to flow uphill. The children's tennis balls, when dropped on the cabin's floor, seemed to roll up. The pendulum of the man's old grandfather clock did not tick evenly. Chairs that tipped over didn't fall. Finally, the cabin's residents noticed that even people seemed to have to stand at an angle within the cabin. For some reason, gravity just behaved strangely on an area of that ordinary-seeming wooded slope--an area with a diameter of about 50 meters.
Over time, the cabin kept tilting more and more as it slid down the hill, making the gravitational strangeness of the place more obvious, and unsettling. Researchers from the nearby University of Wisconsin were sent to investigate. One geology expert proposed the theory that the unusual behavior of gravity on that hillside was due to the presence of igneous rock on the hill's other side, in unusually dense quantities.
Eventually, the cabin became a tourist attraction. Some people, to this day, wonder if the Wonder Spot is a hoax. Regardless of whether you believe it is a hoax or not, mystery seems to surround the place.
